Abstract Scope |
In Thailand, there are large areas of pineapple cultivation and pineapple leaf is a byproduct from which pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) may be extracted. PALF has high cellulose content and high mechanical properties. It can be used as alternative replacement for synthetic fiber. Aramid fiber is one of important synthetic fiber that is widely used in many applications. In this research, three concepts were used to improve the reinforcing efficiency of PALF. 1. pre-treatment to breakdown the fiber bundle to elementary microfiber, 2. treatments (silane, low molecular weight rubber) to modify the fiber surface to increase the adhesiveness of the rubber to the fiber and 3. incorporation of adhesion promoter having high polarity. Unidirectional composites were then prepared and the reinforcing efficiency evaluated at low strain using dynamic mechanical analysis and tensile test. With appropriate surface treatment and adhesion promoter, PALF displays clear potential as high performance reinforcing fiber. |
