Abstract Scope |
Emirates Global Aluminum (EGA) executed a project to improve the reliability of pot shell demolition facility by enhancing the equipment design. The operation of this facility is directly linked with hot metal production in an aluminum smelting plant. Cleaning process of pot shell is carried out by 4 articulated booms inside an acoustic chamber. These units are working under 260 bar of hydraulic pressure and equipped with jack hammers, crusher jaw, scrapper and buckets.
Multiple breakdowns were observed in this facility which compromises the plant security and pot turn around process. Major failures were observed due to booms structural damages and outage of hydraulic system.
This paper discusses the design improvements implemented in pot demolition facility. The design improvements include structural enhancement of articulated booms, integration of standby hydraulic pump, accumulator for hydraulic power unit, continuous monitoring of oil quality and additional Cooling System. |
