Abstract Scope |
For production of Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs), the use of more cost-effective raw materials is limited from their lower purity and higher concentration of interstitial elements (Oxygen). In this work, it is explored Oxygen effects on required cooling rate to avoid crystallization, the crystalline phases formation, and the addition of rare-earth elements (Y and Er) as a method to expand the amorphous processing window of a few selected Zr-based BMGs. In detail: (i) how oxygen contamination and cooling rates affect Vitreloy 105 (Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5) and Zr48Cu46.5Al4Nb1.5 BMG composite processing, (ii) propose and validate a method of stoichiometric addition of Y to Vitreloy 105 to getter the oxygen and form Y2O3 in a way to expand the amorphous processing window, and (iii) recent results on understanding the effects of sub- or super-stoichiometric additions of Y and Er on amorphous processing window for Vitreloy 105 and Vitreloy 601 (Zr50.8Cu36.1Ni4Al9.1). |
