Abstract Scope |
Medium manganese steels (containing 3-11 wt.% Mn) are promising candidates for automotive applications as these steels have been shown to exhibit exceptional levels of ductility (TE >30%) and reasonably high strength (UTS >750 MPa). In the present study, effect of hot rolling and cold rolling on microstructure and mechanical properties of intercritically annealed Fe-4.9Mn-0.2C-0.73Si-0.34Al steel was investigated. Hot rolled and intercritically annealed (HRA) steel showed dual phase lamellar austenite (17 volume %) and ferrite microstructure, whereas cold rolled and intercritically annealed (CRA) steel showed dual phase globular shaped austenite (30 volume %) and ferrite microstructure. CRA steel showed better mechanical response as compared to HRA steel owing to its higher austenite fraction. HRA displayed continuous yielding behavior, whereas CRA displayed discontinuous yielding behavior. The difference in yielding behavior can be explained based on the difference in strain partitioning between the phases. |
