Abstract Scope |
Nickel alloy 718 has been applied in petroleum production when high strength is needed for oilfield tools in corrosive environments with high concentration of hydrogen sulfide. Since the technology of metal additive manufacturing is emerging, additively manufactured (AM) 718 parts become attractive because additive manufacturing, especially powder bed fusion (Laser or electron-beam PBF), can be used to build near-net complicated geometry, thus leading to the lower machining cost and shorter lead time. On the other hand, wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is a rapid-fabrication process, with an advantage of high efficiency and low cost over PBF in large-scale industrial production. To explore the opportunity of WAAM 718 in oilfield tools, alloy 718 testing coupons are made by WAAM and conducted with post-processes of stress relief, hot isostatic pressing, solution treatment and aging hardening to achieve properties in accordance with API6ACRA. Microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of WAAM 718 are discussed. |
