Abstract Scope |
Recent studies identified promising technologies for reducing CO2 emissions in the processing of aluminum foil, cathode foil and Pouch-Cell-Laminates (PCL), although the economic aspects are often neglected. In this study, the specific capital costs per ton of CO2 savings (ΔCAPEX) and running costs per ton of CO2 savings (ΔOPEX) for decarbonization technologies were examined, whereby ΔOPEX has a stronger influence on the investment decision than ΔCAPEX. This paper compares different technologies from an ecological and economic perspective and presents decision models for selecting the right technologies. It is shown that the electrification, especially for heat generation, is often the least attractive decarbonization technology in many countries at current market prices. This paper presents a process route for the production of aluminium and cathode foils in which the direct emissions from the rolling and converting process have been reduced to less than 0.1 tons of CO2equ. per ton of aluminium. |
