Presentation Title Radical innovation for zero-emissions alumina production: the AlSiCal technology

Abstract Scope The world is facing an unprecedent scenario, where geopolitical and economic factors are deeply entwined with increasingly complex environmental and social challenges. Fostering sustainability whilst ensuring economic competitiveness and growth, and securing essential materials supply, requires substantial innovation leaps. Bauxite is unevenly distributed in the world, which implies high imports dependency for large economic powers, like USA, EU, India and China. Thus, processing alternative and accessible alumina sources with zero-emissions technologies can secure more sustainable supply. The AlSiCal technology processes non-bauxitic minerals to co-produce alumina, silica and calcium products with zero emissions. In addition to generating no bauxite residue or other hazardous waste, AlSiCal can be deployed as a CO2 sink (negative emissions), by producing calcium carbonate through CO2 injection. AlSiCal was first envisaged in a Research and Innovation project funded by the European Commission (ref. 820911), finalized in 2024, and it is currently being upscaled and de-risked towards industrialization.
