Abstract Scope |
Most metals exhibit a critical minimum in ductility under plane strain tension loading. A novel axisymmetric V-bending technique is proposed to identify the strain to fracture and the weakest in-plane direction of sheet metal for this stress state. A disc shaped specimen is clamped on its inner and outer boundaries and drawn over a tubular knife until fracture initiates on the specimen surface. A digital camera with a quadratic sensor is employed to take images of the deformation history of the specimen throughout the experiment and to detect fracture initiation. Planar Digital Image Correlation is used to calculate the surface strains. It is shown from numerical simulations that the setup is robust and the results show only a very low sensitivity to geometric imperfections. Experiments are performed on aluminum alloys and dual-phase steels to demonstrate the validity of the proposed technique through comparison with conventional V-bending and dihedral mini-Nakazima experiments. |
