Abstract Scope |
Electron nanodiffraction has emerged as a valuable tool to understand nanoscale structures that may have significant implication to the properties of metallic glasses (MGs). By probing nanoscale volumes one at a time, the technique can provide useful insights on how the nanoscale structure varies over different positions of the material, which complements other methods, such as pair distribution functions from large area scattering experiments. Challenges still remain in terms of how to analyze the large set of nanodiffraction data so that reliable information about the heterogeneity can be determined. Combined with 4D-STEM nanodiffraction, we apply machine learning based on Siamese neural network to distinguish the local medium range ordering that constitutes the heterogeneity. We then incorporate the information from 4D-STEM to atomistic and mesoscale simulations to establish new understanding on how the heterogeneity affects important properties of MGs. The effect of composition, cooling rate, and heat treatment will be discussed. |
