Abstract Scope |
There is a growing interest in dynamic indentation due to its ability to characterize high strain-rate mechanical response of small volume of materials. Herein, we focus on understanding the effects of inertia, indenter geometry and material properties on dynamic hardness. Specifically, we analyze the dynamic indentation of materials using a conical indenter over a wide range of indentation velocities, utilizing both finite element calculations and an analytical cavity expansion model. Our results show that, for low to moderately high indentation loading-rates, the dynamic hardness correlates well with the material’s strain rate sensitivity. However, at high indentation loading-rates, the dynamic hardness is influenced by both the indentation depth and the indentation strain-rate, while at ultra-high indentation loading-rates, it is primarily dependent on the indentation loading-rate itself. In addition to these results, we will also present a set of non-dimensional parameters that normalize the effects of indenter geometry and indentation depth. |
