Abstract Scope |
This presentation will provide a summary of how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to design better biomaterials for various medical applications. It is well known that due to variations in immune systems from patient to patient, patients will respond differently to the same biomaterial and/or drug, thus, personalized or AI tailored treatments are necessary. Here, AI designed spinal implants with nanotextured surfaces will be presented which have been tailored to one’s immune system and have demonstrated zero implant failure over the past 5 years of implanting 30,000 devices in humans. Furthermore, AI implantable sensors have been designed, fabricated, and tested in vivo which incorporate AI to improve tissue regrowth and inhibit infection. AI incorporation into shape memory polymers will also be presented for the treatment of scoliosis. In summary, this presentation presents a positive view on the implementation of AI into medicine via the design of improved medical devices. |
