Abstract Scope |
In this study, we characterized the structure of the Euplectella Aspergillum sponge skeleton, focusing on its shape, dimensions, and components. The sponge's framework consists of intricately tangled fibers arranged to form a tough, load-bearing structure composed of polymers and ceramics. The sponge skeleton features a hierarchical arrangement, with nested ceramic cylinders encasing a polymer core. This unique architecture plays a crucial role in crack propagation prevention. The novel structure of the sponge fibers called spicules has inspired the development of bone implants using brittle ceramics. The fiber arrangement enables these implants to resist significant loads, mimicking the mechanical properties of the natural sponge. Our research discusses the results of the characterization assessment and evaluates how these findings can inspire the fabrication of artificial organs. By understanding the structural intricacies of the Euplectella Aspergillum sponge, we can develop innovative biomimetic materials with applications in tissue engineering and other medical fields. |
