Abstract Scope |
Emerging economic sectors will require transporting gaseous products at higher pressures necessitating high-strength or thick-gauge line pipe steels. The objective of this study is to understand the microstructure and mechanical properties in a hot-rolled 22-mm thick Nb microalloyed high-strength line pipe steel and model yield strength of the alloy. Microstructural analysis, through the thickness of the plate, was conducted using advanced microscopy tools. The evolution of mechanical properties has been analyzed in terms of tensile testing as a function of orientation and location along the thickness of the plate. The yield strength of the plate through the thickness was predicted using strengthening mechanism models. Microstructure and tensile properties were noted to vary through thickness. The tensile properties were also found to show anisotropy. The experimental and calculated yield strength behavior will facilitate an understanding of the reasons for anisotropy and the effect of microstructure on yield strength. |
