Abstract Scope |
A research effort seeks to model, manufacture, and design gradient metallic alloys. This talk will emphasize Ti-based alloys. Multiple gradient approaches are adopted, including the use of composition and thermal gradients. This talk will describe three key components of gradient materials. Firstly, their modeling. A case study is given regarding the modeling associated with the processing of a Ti-xW based alloy. Given the differences in the thermophysical properties across the Ti-xW binary space, it is necessary to predict processing conditions to successfully process arbitrary compositions along the gradient. This study is based upon FEM-based approaches. Secondly, their manufacture. A case study involves the use of thermal gradients to induce variations in microstructures and properties. Both a single composition and gradient compositions are used in combination with engineered thermal gradients. Lastly, their design. This talks discusses challenges and opportunities associated with designing gradients for properties, beginning with elasticity. |
