Abstract Scope |
Metallic glasses are attractive materials for use in high radiation and corrosive environments, due to their lack of crystal structure and grains. However, many high radiation and corrosive environments are also at elevated temperatures. This requires metallic glasses with high glass transition temperatures. This typically requires using refractory metals to raise the glass transition temperatures. However, forming bulk refractory glasses is difficult with traditional metallic glass casting methods due to reduced glass forming ability. We investigate several compositions of nickel-based glasses with high refractory metal content. Nickel-molybdenum-tungsten-niobium glasses were produced using mechanical alloying and directed energy deposition additive manufacturing to mitigate the reduced glass forming ability and produce bulk samples. |
