Abstract Scope |
The eutectic alloys including ternary eutectics present an exciting opportunity for new alloy development. Exciting possibilities exist for developing novel microstructure in this class of alloys. In this presentation, we will highlight some of the interesting results that we have obtained in last fifteen years in various alloy system. We will first present briefly our early work on Ni-Al-Zr eutectic system that provide exciting microstructure variations that can be exploited for high strength. This will be followed by our more recent work on the Al-Cu-Si and Al-N-Zr ternary alloys. Finally, we will present complex microstructural evolution in Al-Ce near eutectic alloys with addition of small amount of Scandium. In all these alloys surprising microstructure during solidification and their subsequent aging provide new opportunities in alloy development. |
