Abstract Scope |
Research on H-beams focuses on achieving high strength and toughness. To enhance performance, H-beams undergo a production process involving hot rolling, quenching, and self-tempering (QST). However, a significant challenge arises from residual stress generated during production due to thermal gradients, which can degrade beam performance. Predicting beam failure becomes challenging due to the combination of external stress and residual stress. Therefore, it's crucial to measure residual stress distribution. We propose a method for estimating residual stress in hot rolled and QST-processed H-beams using non-destructive indentation testing. We conducted micro tensile tests and used an optical surface profiler to measure mechanical properties and pile-up. Investigating the relationship between pile-up, residual stress, and mechanical properties allows us to estimate residual stress in H-beams. |
