Abstract Scope |
“Ultra-high” temperature (T > 1700°C) materials are needed which can endure the large stresses, high temperatures, and highly oxidizing environments experienced by hypersonic vehicles. Select transition metals and metal carbides have high strength and form solid oxides at ultra-high temperatures. However, they have notably poor oxidation resistance and the oxidation mechanisms above 1300°C are not well understood. In this work, the oxidation kinetics of Zr and ZrC were studied by resistively heating samples to 1300-1800°C in a 1% O2 (bal. Ar) environment for up to 20 minutes. The resulting oxides were characterized via SEM and XRD. Where applicable, a direct comparison of oxide morphology, oxidation kinetics and mechanisms for Zr and ZrC is reported. The behavior of ZrC in the ultra-high temperature oxidizing regime, will also be discussed. |
