Abstract Scope |
We present a comprehensive study of medium-range ordering (MRO) in Zr-based metallic glasses (MGs) using 4-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM). By employing the angular correlation function and direct MRO mapping based on the 4D-STEM nanodiffraction data, we demonstrate how the gradual change in composition affects the MRO structure in ZrCu, ZrCuAl, and ZrCuNiTiAl MGs. This provides insights into the formation of MRO during the glass transition process of these MGs. We then correlate these trends with changes in their properties, including glass-forming ability and mechanical properties. Our study offers significant insights into how different types of MROs form as the composition of the MGs changes and the potential mechanisms by which their properties are influenced by such changes in the MRO. The study underscores the importance of understanding MRO in MGs and the potential for tuning their MRO structure to achieve desired properties. |
