Abstract Scope |
The automotive industry is increasingly adopting laser-welded blanks with advanced high-strength steel for improving vehicle light-weighting as well as maximum material utilization. In this study, the laser-welded blanks with GEN3-980 material were tested using cross-form tooling. Two different blank designs were used to change stress conditions on the weld seam and base metal to obtain necking on base metal and fracture on the weld. The material properties of weld metal and GEN3 980 base metal were obtained from the uniaxial tensile testing. The material constative models for both weld and base metal were defined and used for FE simulations with AutoForm. FE simulations showed a better correlation with experimental results by considering the weld material properties compared to the case by ignoring the weld properties. This study addresses both numerical challenges and opportunities for improving the accuracy of the sheet metal forming simulation to predict necking and fracture for the use of industry. |
