Abstract Scope |
Advanced nuclear reactor designs present more corrosive, hotter, and higher-irradiation environments than those in today’s nuclear reactor fleet, necessitating new materials and processes that must be developed in a timely manner. Additive manufacturing opens up numerous design opportunities to realize high performance components with a potentially shorter design cycle as compared to traditional manufacturing. However, one of the challenges of deploying Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies to support the nuclear energy industry is current lack of data related to the irradiation performance of AM parts. The objectives of this presentation are to demonstrate methods for rapid nuclear material screening through high-throughput testing design, fast irradiation data collection using in-situ ion and neutron irradiation testing; and to present some neutron irradiation results in test reactor environments such as stainless steel 316 L, Inconel 718, and Inconel 625 samples, which are supported by the Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF) program.
