Abstract Scope |
It is well-known that Zn metal is catastrophically embrittled via grain boundary wetting when exposed to a liquid mixture of Ga and In having eutectic composition. However, this same liquid-solid system displays other anomalous behavior, namely the formation of solid disc-like Zn crystals within the liquid metal droplet. Equilibrium thermodynamics predicts some dissolution of the solid Zn into the liquid mixture, but the reprecipitation of the Zn is unexplained. In this work, the formation of these discoid Zn crystals is experimentally investigated as a function of the initial Zn microstructure and environmental conditions. |
