Abstract Scope |
When heated, metallic glasses undergo structural relaxation (reduction in enthalpy and volume), typically accompanied by embrittlement. This degradation in mechanical properties hinders the extent to which simple treatments can achieve stress relief and thermoplastic forming. In this talk, we review strategies for reducing the embrittlement. These include:
tailoring of the temperature-time profile (typically, shorter times at higher temperature are preferred);
prior treatment of the metallic glass, for example by cryogenic thermal cycling or another rejuvenation method;
introduction of heterogeneities;
tailoring of composition.
The progress with each of these approaches will be reviewed, and the prospects for further advances assessed. |
