Abstract Scope |
Grain boundary (GB) segregation of dopants can strongly influence mechanical properties including the fracture toughness, in magnesium aluminate spinel (MAS). However, the direct correlation between the atomic-level segregation behaviors and the microscale mechanical properties has not been clearly understood yet. In this study, therefore, the segregation behaviors of Ca and Y doping atoms in MAS were quantitatively evaluated by using advanced electron microscopy techniques. For example, high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging and electron energy-loss spectrometry spectrum imaging were employed to confirm the segregation of Ca and Y atoms at GBs. In addition, Vickers microhardness and fracture toughness were measured. Also, cracks that propagated from the tip of the microhardness indentations were analyzed to quantify the fraction of transgranular/intergranular cracking by electron backscatter diffraction analysis, which provided a better understanding of the crack propagation behaviors and the modification of GB strengths due to dopant segregation. |
