Abstract Scope |
Light water reactors (LWRs) are low carbon sources of power and are critical to meeting the United States’ energy needs. Accident tolerant fuels (ATFs) are fuel and cladding systems for LWRs that perform better under transient conditions than currently used UO2 and Zircaloy systems. ATFs may also help facilitate burnup extension and reactor uprates to meet energy demands. However, ATF materials need to be qualified to support reactor operation. A modified burst test (MBT) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has been utilized to perform separate-affects mechanical tests to support qualifying ATF claddings under reactivity-initiated accident (RIA) conditions. To analyze cladding performance in MBTs, digital image correlation (DIC) allows for the calculation of full-field in-situ hoop strains. An analysis procedure has been developed and modified herein and has been investigated to ensure the highest quality in-situ strain data can be used for BISON code validation. |
