Abstract Scope |
Due to the extrusion physics of Material extrusion-based additive manufacturing technique, parts fabricated using this method exhibit low mechanical strength and rough surface finish. This work presents a technique to address the mechanical and geometrical issues for material extrusion-based additive manufacturing. This technique uses laser heating to improve the material kinetics at interfaces and surface reflow at side surfaces for better mechanical strength and surface finish. The laser heating system is capable of orbiting around the nozzle to allow thermal treatment during the fabrication process regardless of the printhead moving direction. With this technique, the tensile strength along the build direction increased to up to 80% of material strength; the surface roughness drops from 15 µm to 2 µm. Samples treated with this technique have been observed to exhibit more ductile fracture behavior and higher crystallinity, using SEM and DSC respectively. |
