Abstract Scope |
Albeit the common observations of heterogeneous oxides, a theoretical understanding is yet to emerge on how such heterogeneities affect charged particle transport and oxide growth kinetics. In this study, we investigate the impact of locally ordered Au and Ag noble metallic inclusions (NMIs) in zirconium oxide on oxygen vacancies and electron transport and oxide growth using an integrated experimental and modeling approach. NMIs are synthesized inside ZrO2 using a series of plasma vapor deposition and electron beam lithography techniques. The space charge around the noble NMIs is measured using 4D Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy Center of Mass imaging, a technique validated on defect-free ZrN/GaN planar interface formed by molecular beam epitaxy, and modeled using ab-initio techniques. Finally, isotopic oxidation is used to investigate the space charge induced distribution of oxidizing species, and NV-center based quantum sensor techniques are developed to map current density heterogeneous oxides at the nanoscale. |
