Abstract Scope |
Novel impact-based, high velocity joining processes are being demonstrated on multi-material joints for the automotive industry. Two such multimaterial joints were produced in clinch form using a novel High Velocity (HiVe) technique developed at PNNL. Joints comprising AA6061-AA6061 3mm thick sheet and AA6061-Steel (DP590), showed metallurgical bonding and high lap-shear strengths. To better understand the microstructural features responsible for these favorable properties, synchrotron x-ray diffraction was used to map the residual strain and phase distribution at the joint interface and the base material in transmission geometry at beamline 1-ID-E, APS. Lattice-plane-specific residual stresses as a function of location were calculated in two salient perpendicular directions using diffraction peak positions. Further, peak widths were used to understand the spatial variation of crystallite size and dislocation density. Additionally, changes in the peak intensity were used to gain a preliminary understanding of the localized changes in crystallographic texture that occurred during the process. |
