Abstract Scope |
Transition metal hydrides are being studied as moderators for advanced nuclear concepts where size is a critical factor. Zirconium hydrides (ZrHx), in particular, are of great interest due to their low thermal neutron cross section and high hydrogen content. However, hydrogen release and subsequent phase transformations could be problematic in nuclear systems. This release can lead to changes in the moderating efficiency and mechanical properties of the material. To this end, understanding the stability of ZrH in non-equilibrium conditions (i.e., under irradiation) is critical to the further development of ZrH moderators. In-situ TEM ion irradiation was conducted at the IVEM facility at Argonne National Laboratory over a range of temperatures to explore this phenomenon. Results on the phase stability of ZrH under ion irradiation at different temperatures will be presented. |
