Abstract Scope |
Mesoporous β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) has shown great potential as a biomaterial for orthopedic applications due to its biocompatibility and osteoconductivity. However, scalable and cost-effective production techniques are needed to meet future demands. In this study, different mesoporous β-TCP powders were synthesized using spray drying, a potential low-cost and scalable production method, with calcination temperatures ranging between 800 and 1100°C. The synthesized powders were characterized using various techniques including X-Ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, BET analysis, and in-vitro cell viability tests. The results showed that the average particle sizes of the powders ranged between 0.3 and 1.8 µm, the BET surface areas ranged between 16 and 64 m2/g, and the average pore diameters were approximately 3 nm. The in-vitro cell viability tests demonstrated that all β-TCP powders synthesized at 900, 1000, and 1100 °C exhibited no cytotoxicity, except for the powder synthesized at 800 °C.
