Abstract Scope |
Certain classes of multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) offer the potential for superior strength and ductility compared to conventional alloys. Energetic ion irradiation is a useful tool to probe the microstructural stability of MPEAs over a wide range of temperatures. The irradiation can enhance the diffusivity of solute atoms by many orders of magnitude (thereby speeding up thermal aging processes), but in many cases can also induce preferential solute segregation at grain boundaries, pre-existing precipitates, etc. This presentation will summarize recent ion irradiation studies on several ductile refractory MPEAs that are promising candidates for high temperature extreme environment applications. The phase stability and general microstructural evolution following irradiation between room temperature and 800C will be quantified, and bulk equivalent hardness (determined by nanoindentation tests) will be compared to the predicted mechanical strength obtained from the microstructure analysis. The key conditions for inducing crystal to amorphous phase transitions will be discussed. |
