Abstract Scope |
Metal casting is a foundation industry characterised by a significant amount of energy required per unit of product and, therefore, it is a remarkable contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Furthermore, as the global demand for metal products continues to rise, foundries are struggling to meet more and more ambitious aims to reduce their environmental impact. This work shows the ongoing development of a computer program aimed at reducing energy and embodied carbon dioxide equivalent emissions in metal casting production plants, identifying relevant "hotspots" and supporting decision-making with customised analyses that require minimal input data. The proposed tool models material, energy and carbon dioxide flows during production and through the supply chain in a simplified, yet sufficiently accurate way. Validation and development have been carried out in collaboration with industrial experts and real foundries. Results demonstrate potential for significant energy savings, reduced GHG emissions and improved overall sustainability performance. |
