Abstract Scope Fluoride nanoparticles activated with lanthanide ions were recently investigated for their luminescence in the optical range, especially in the near-infrared region (NIR). These nanoparticles are particularly interesting for applications in nanomedicine, particularly as optical probes or sensors in biological windows. This contribution focuses on ternary fluorides, such as KY3F10 nanoparticles, properly activated with lanthanide ions, such as Nd3+, Tm3+, Er3+, and Yb3+. These nanoparticles have been prepared as water colloids. Hydrophilic capping agents, such as citrate ions, have been employed since their coordination on the nanoparticle surface confers excellent colloidal stability to water-based dispersions. A proper core@shell architecture has been considered to enhance the luminescence efficiency upon NIR laser excitation. Tailored energy transfer processes among different lanthanide ions have been exploited to optimize thermometric performances. The evaluated thermal sensitivities point to a promising use of the nanoparticles as optical thermometers for biomedical applications.
