Abstract Scope |
Magnetocaloric materials can be utilized in magnetic cooling due to their effect of a temperature change triggered by a magnetic field. Our aim is to transfer this magnetocaloric effect into environmentally friendly cooling solutions. One key problem is the shaping of the magnetocaloric materials into suitable heat exchanger geometries, needing to satisfy two opposing demands: Coarse structures support an easy transfer of the medium, while a high surface to volume ratio is beneficial for effective heat exchange. Besides, fatigue and corrosion resistance need to be considered.
In this work we present our current research to form brittle magnetocaloric materials by adapting the Powder-In-Tube method which results in thin, stable composite wires containing a magnetocaloric core and a protective jacket. By means of magnetic, mechanical and optical characterization as well as simulations we enhance the current understanding of this procedure to further optimize the magnetocaloric performance of these composites. |
