Abstract Scope |
There are multiple ways to measure the bulk density of calcined petroleum coke (CPC), but the aluminum industry has been unable to agree on a common test/standard method. The tests are used to monitor the consistency of CPC quality and as a predictor of pitch demand and anode density in anode plants. Most methods suffer with poor reproducibility when results are compared between different laboratories. This paper will review some previous publications and present data from a recent detailed comparison of the different test methods across a wide range of samples over an extended time period. Whilst general correlations exist between the different test methods, some samples show poor correlation which highlights the challenge in using these tests for anything other than a high-level indicator of coke bulk density/porosity. |
