Abstract Scope |
Crystal plasticity approaches have been available for decades, with numerous implementations and variations. Researchers have often integrated constitutive formulations to match macroscopic experiments typically under monotonic or cyclic loading, independently. This approach ignores that the mechanisms controlling dislocation glide at the atomic scale are identical regardless of the loading condition, and results in overfitting of the parameters to match datasets separately.
In this talk we will present a single mechanistic model is applied to monotonic and cyclic loading, across temperatures and strain rates. We will demonstrate the value of combining data from different loading conditions to understand the underlying mechanisms and parameters, even when models can reproduce the macroscopic response. We will explore sources of epistemic and aleatory uncertainty and their impact on model predictive power. We will conclude by examining opening challenges and opportunities to advance the prediction of the mechanical responses in metals.
