Presentation Title Comparison of Small-scale Wootz Steel Production Methods
Author(s) Stephen G. Gebes
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Stephen G. Gebes
Abstract Scope The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Bladesmithing Team will present a comparison of traditional and modern wootz steel production methods. The team will also present results comparing the physical properties, chemical composition, and microstructure of small-batch crucible trials. The results will highlight factors to develop an optimal wootz steel composition, forging, and heat treatment recipe and implications for using it as a starting material for the South Dakota School of Mines Bladesmithing Team’s submission to the 2026 TMS Bladesmithing competition.
