Abstract Scope |
Additive manufacturing (AM) has revolutionized the production of complex structures, particularly in the realm of composite materials. However, ensuring the structural integrity of additively manufactured composite joints remains a formidable challenge. This abstract introduces an innovative approach that combines cutting-edge discrete computational modeling with the concept of digital twins to test and optimize these critical structural elements.
While homogeneous and multiscale models can quickly and efficiently characterize elastic response of these complex structures, they lack the accuracy in capturing the inherent complex damage mechanisms and fracturing behavior of composites. In this article, the novel Discrete Model for Composites (DM4C) is introduced and used to overcome these issues.
The Anisoprint PROM 500 is used to manufacture different designs of topologically optimized structural joints from which digital twins are created using the same gcodes, yielding perfect virtual replicas. By integrating experimental data and material properties, the digital twins can be used to further optimize and enable reliable predictions of mechanical behavior and failure modes of the structures.
Furthermore, the model's scalability and computational efficiency allow for rapid iteration and sensitivity analysis, accelerating the future design iteration cycles of similar and improved structural joints. The insights gained from virtual testing not only enhance the reliability and safety of additively manufactured composite joints but also pave the way for innovative design concepts and novel applications across industries such as aerospace, automotive, and robotics. |
