Abstract Scope |
Directed Energy Deposition (DED) is a common additive manufacturing technique, allowing for the production or repair of components with geometric complexity. However, the processing window in DED to produce components without defects and with acceptable mechanical properties is relatively limited. Applied external fields promises to increase the processing window without major drawbacks. We studied the application of ultrasound to the DED process with in situ synchrotron radiography, investigating the mechanisms of the phenomena and coupling those mechanisms with ex situ characterisation techniques to the microstructural modification of grain size and texture observed under applied ultrasound. Applying ultrasound presents both exciting potential and challenges for microstructural control during DED. |
