Abstract Scope |
Commercially available wire is attractive as additive manufacturing (AM) feedstock due its generally lower cost, higher material utilization and smaller specific surface area for oxygen pickup than powder. Process development work for Haynes 282 superalloy is underway on the Meltio 450 laser-assisted direct energy deposition machine and initial work is reported here. The Meltio 450 offers several advantages over other wire AM processing with its multi-laser high-power assembly, resistance wire heating, and relatively small heat affected zones (HAZ). Single track and multi-track bead-on-plate experiments show that Haynes 282 processed well for a wide variety of laser power and laser speeds, establishing a potentially wide processing window. Additional experiments are performed to optimize the scan strategy and track spacing using cubes of various heights. The melt pool characteristics, defect distribution, HAZ and microstructure as a function of the processing conditions are evaluated. This work is supported by NETL-FWP-1022406 Advanced Alloy Development. |
