Abstract Scope |
Multiphase microstructure control in laser additive manufacturing of metallic alloys is shown to produce unusual microstructures with phase dimensions in the micro to nanometer range. In this presentation, examples from ternary Fe-Ni-Cr alloys processed by laser beam directed energy deposition and powder bed fusion will be highlighted. Using heterogeneous duplex / austenitic stainless steel powder mixtures and varying laser scan strategies, a variety of ferrite/austenite heterostructures comprising of equilibrium as well as metastable structures, were produced. The unusual mechanical behavior, particularly, high strength and high strain hardening rate is interpreted in terms of the chemical and structural heterogeneities in the 3D printed alloys. |
