A finite element model (FE) of a human radius bone was used to evaluate the potential effectiveness of a novel porous AM Ti-6Al-4V implant used in Osteocutaneous radial forearm free flap fixation. This free flap can be used for small scale reconstructions but with considerable risk. This study aims to compare the use of a solid and porous AM Ti-6Al-4V implant. A 3D surface scan (3DSS) was taken of a model radius bone and converted to a functional FE model. Using SOLIDWORKS, a representative cavity was created following surgical guidelines and served as a template for implant analysis. Analysis included simulations of both a solid and porous implant for stress distributions around the cavity and total deformation of the radial bone to infer the effectiveness as a stabilizing implant. |
