Abstract Scope |
Corrosion susceptibility of Mg alloys is a key technical challenge. To mitigate corrosion risks, surface treatment and coating techniques using plasma jets have been recently demonstrated on AZ91D and AM60 Mg alloy substrates. AZ91D treated with ionized CO2 plasma jet in CO2 enriched environment produced micro-scale rough and C and O richer surfaces which increased the adhesion of epoxy primer coating. The epoxy coating on CO2 plasma treated AZ91D Mg alloy protected the substrate during salt spray exposures. Meanwhile, open-air plasma assisted organosilicon coating deposition was also performed on AZ91D and AM60 Mg alloy substrates as a chemical-lean and industrial-scalable process. The coating process formed uniform, and defect-free surface layer composed of Si, O and C on the Mg alloy substrate and exhibited significant increase in corrosion resistance as evaluated by electrochemical measurements with short- and mid-term 3.5 wt.% NaCl immersion, and H2 collection tests in the same solution. |
