Abstract Scope |
In situ diagnostics along with a greater physical understanding of metal AM processes is seen as the path to better detection and prevention of print anomalies. Most research in this area has focused on studying the solid and liquid portion of the process, with little focus on the emission plume which forms directly above the laser metal interaction. A series of high-speed and height resolved spectra were collected for a parameter sweep of line scans, along with simultaneous, bandpass filtered high-speed video to study plume dynamics on TiAl6V4 samples. The stability, temperature and intensity of the plume was found to vary greatly depending on speed and laser power. Experiments also indicate the brightest portion of the plume is frequently elevated above the scanned surface, indicating laser absorption in the vapor.
