Abstract Scope |
A series of B2-(Ru,Pd)Al alloys with varied Ru:Pd ratio between RuAl and PdAl were prepared by arc melting and annealing. Their performance as prospective bond coat materials for high-temperature applications was examined by oxidation testing in dry air at 1300 °C. The composition with pure Ru (i.e., Ru50Al50; the subscripts denote atomic percentage) exhibits limited protection in oxidizing environment due to the formation of alternating Al2O3/Ru layers. Addition of Pd to RuAl, even with a low concentration, significantly alters the oxidation behavior. Both Ru45Pd5Al50 and Ru35Pd15Al50 generate single-layer Al2O3 TGO, although Ru35Pd15Al50 better suppresses pore formation under TGO due to faster Al replenishment under the surface. For the Pd-rich compositions and pure B2-PdAl, TGO spallation and inward oxidation through cracks were observed, implying non-stable B2 phases and larger mismatch in thermal expansion. |
