Abstract Scope |
Under Deposit Corrosion (UDC) poses a threat to the integrity of industrial system steels due to the build-up of porous coating layers that concentrates corrodents near metal-solution interfaces. UDC requires the removal of sections for inspection and produces massive costs in early replacement. Reducing costs, material waste, early replacement and the prevention of unexpected failures requires furthering our understanding UDC in these steels. The formation of a porous metal oxide during UDC, with higher than expected pilling Bedworth ratio, is suggested to be the result of pore stabilisation by Cl ions during oxide growth. In this work, a novel Matlab based analytical method utilising SEM-EDX data is developed to map the spatial and intensity distribution of Cl in post-corrosion samples. Supported by model distributions. This method has shown that the Cl distribution is closely related to the porosity within the oxide layer supporting the proposed Cl pore stabilisation mechanism. |
