Abstract Scope |
Recent reports indicate that sufficient additions of Fe can promote formation of an ordered-bcc intermetallic phase TiFe (B2) offering scope to develop a bcc-B2 phase field. However, a variety of non-equilibrium, nanoscale decomposition products exist in metastable β-Ti alloys. These metastable phases significantly affect the mechanical response of the alloy. In this research, coupling transmission electron microscopy and first principles calculations, the evolution of the athermal ω-phase as a function of bulk alloy Fe content will be presented. Partial collapse of {111}β planes in low solute content alloys, and distorted-β structures without any periodic lattice repeats in alloys with greater bulk Fe contents are attributed to Fe-Fe bonding-stabilisation due to enhanced localized valence charge density. This insight provides fundamental understanding of non-equilibrium phases and metastable boundaries towards Ti-Fe alloy design strategy as a function of both composition and temperature. |
