In this study, FeSiB amorphous foils were subjected to single-track laser thermal treatments with laser fluences ranging from 0.42 J/mm2 to 0.91 J/mm2. A multi-pronged characterization approach was implemented employing site-specific transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction to uncover the microstructure and phase evolution. Laser fluences ≤0.48 J/mm2 led to structural relaxation. An increase in laser fluence evolved partial crystallization featuring α-FeSi as a major phase. The volume fraction of α-FeSi continuously increased as a function of laser fluence, from 3.6 to 46 vol. %. Fe2B evolved as a secondary phase during partial recrystallization for laser fluences ≥0.53 J/mm2. Magnetic measurements using a vibrating sample magnetometer indicated that foils undergoing structural relaxation or experiencing the evolution of predominantly α-FeSi exhibited a similar response to the as-cast material. However, the formation of Fe2B even in minor quantities (~2-7% by volume) deteriorated the soft magnetic properties. |
