Abstract Scope |
Multicomponent diffusion is a complex phenomenon to investigate but has a tremendous potential in designing new alloys and processes. In automobiles, there is a critical need for designing new lightweight alloys. Titanium alloys are especially suited due not only to their density, which is about one third of steels but also to their properties, which are as good as steels. An overview of diffusion studies conducted in various titanium alloy systems will be presented. Application of diffusional interactions in designing alloys will be discussed with an example of controlling precipitation kinetics in Ti-Fe based alloy. Dissimilar metal joining is another emerging automobile application where diffusion studies play crucial role. A case of joining of steel to aluminum alloy will be presented. |
