Abstract Scope |
Recently, we have developed a series of Al-Cr-Mn-Co-Zr alloys that exhibit a nano-composite FCC Al matrix plus QC dispersoid microstructure in gas-atomized powders. Upon consolidation, the microstructure of the powders is retained in the bulk material. This material exhibits remarkable pitting corrosion resistance in salt fog exposure as compared to conventional Al alloys. These alloys are being explored for use in a variety of additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, including powder-bed fusion. The influence of AM processes on the microstructure and corrosion response of these alloys is a key concern. Here, we present preliminary observations on the impact of microstructure on the corrosion behavior of AM samples upon exposure to Cl-rich environments through a combination of scanning and transmission electron microscopy, focused ion-beam milling and polarization techniques. Comparisons with corrosive attack on these alloys in their bulk consolidated conditions will also be discussed. |
